Game Thoughts

Tyler Glasnow frazzled by the rain
This card was pulled during Game #5 of the season against the Rockies

Tyler Glasnow does not like the rain. Stomping around in muddy cleats that he could not get clean to his liking, he could not regain his composure. The Phillies took advantage, and it was a good thing too, because the bullpen led by Jordan Romano, gave up the lead once again.

The story of this year’s Phillies is developing. They fought back once again, and maybe no better example of this is when Edmundo Sosa barely dodged a fastball steamrolling toward his face from Blake Treinen. Hitting the deck and then popping right back up and digging into the batters box IMMEDIATELY gave me chills. That is the epitome of this team. They fight. On this day they fought enough to hand the Dodgers their second loss of the season, and win the series.

Cards

1990 Donruss

Single pack from the recent card show, and this set has a bad reputation. The solid red border design when compared to the seismic shifting 1989 Upper Deck is no comparison. However the set for me has solid photography, and Donruss always comes through with the stats and information on the back as well. The Diamond Kings are simply unmatched in my opinion, and the Rated Rookies are iconic.

Highlights:

  • Don Carman – Phillies card!
  • Andy Van Slyke
  • Kirk Gibson
  • Tom Pagnozzi
  • Diamond Kings – Pete O’Brien

1993 Donruss

1993 Donruss is a stark contrast to the prior opened pack from 1990 Donruss. From Beckett:

The 792-card 1993 Donruss set was issued in two series, each with 396 standard-size cards. Cards were distributed in foil packs……A Rated Rookies (RR) subset, sprinkled throughout the set, spotlights 20 young prospects.

Highlights:

  • Darren Daulton – Phillies card!
  • Roger McDowell
  • Steve Sax – memories of the 1991 Topps Record Breaker card – the importance of inserts that aren’t “hits”
  • Phil Plantier – watching a pitch go by
  • Rookie Cards
    • Pat Howell
    • Cris Colon
    • Shane Reynolds – oldest looking rookie ever on the back of the card
