Game #002 – Phillies 11 vs Nationals 6 – 2024 Topps Pack

Game Thoughts

I won’t do full game recaps like I did for the season opener, so I’ll share some thoughts on each game, with some sort of card/cards that were opened or gone through during the game. This game was caught on the radio while I was traveling on the road, it was a beautiful day and nice to hear the game on the radio. My ideal setup would be grilling something outside with a beer and the game on the radio.

Once again Colin Poche comes in for the Nationals and the Phillies take advantage in the 6th with a 5 run inning to propel the Phillies to a 2-0 start to the season.

Positives

  • Jesús Luzardo’s performance with 11 strikeouts, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, gets the W
  • Stott’s homerun in the 2nd to tie the ballgame
  • Schwarber with another homerun today for his 2nd of the year

Negatives
Myself and all of Philadelphia is still not sold on the bullpen, something that will have to be proven over time.

2024 Topps Series 1 – Single Pack

2024 Topps Series 1 – American League Leaders – former Phillies pitcher Zach Eflin

In between driving places I had 5 minutes to turn the game on the tv at the house and rip 1 pack. I chose 2024 Topps Series 1 because I absolutely love the design of this set. I actually pulled 2 packs to rip, Series 1 and an Update Pack, but had to leave before ripping the Update pack.

Zach Eflin’s cards have come up in the first two games, the American League Leaders card today, tied for wins. Pulled these two former Phillies in yesterday’s 2025 Topps Series 1 Hanger Box:

2025 Topps Series 1 – Zach Eflin

1989 Topps 35th Anniversary Shohei Ohtani

35th Anniversary 1989 Topps Shohei Ohtani

This was AWESOME to pull out of the pack in the 5 minutes that I had between trips. Love the 1989 design, it is one of my absolute favorites. The curved design of the team name with the name brings back so many memories of opening cards. I personally collect Shohei Ohtani, so this was just phenomenal to see.

In defense of Stars of MLB cards

This is an amazing looking card. Look at the colors, and while I’m not a big fan of the City Connect jerseys, this right here just works in every aspect. Visually jarring, and the word that comes to mind is impact. This card stands out, and when you think of new collectors looking to find out who is a star in the league, this card is a perfect mechanism to do that. This subset tells you who in the league are standout performers and I just have loved this series. These cards are great, and it reminds me of the All-Star cards we had back in the day which told you who the best players are.

No Phillies cards in this pack, but we got a win in the standings!
